In our quest to record the histories of the Civil Rights and LGBT Equality movements, Truth in Progress spent a September morning with professor, writer, activist Sarah Schulman in the West Village of New York City. We covered many topics related to the gay rights movement(s), pre and post Stonewall, AIDS activism, ACT UP (the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power), marriage equality, "pinkwashing," and much more. This video captures her comparisons of the parallel strategies of ACT UP and the Civil Rights Movement and the resulting cultural shifts. Her clarity and precision were refreshing as well as insightful.
Sarah is a Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at the City University of New York, College or Staten Island and a Fellow at the New York Institute for the Humanities at New York University. She is a historian, novelist, playwright, and filmmaker. Two recent books are The Gentrification of the Mind: Witness to a Lost Imagination (University of California Press, 2012) and Ties That Bind: Familial Homophobia and Its Consequences (The New Press, 2011).
She and Jim Hubbard just released the documentary UNITED IN ANGER: A History of ACT UP, "...an inspiring documentary about the birth and life of the AIDS activist movement from the perspective of the people in the trenches fighting the epidemic. Utilizing oral histories of members of ACT UP, as well as rare archival footage, the film depicts the efforts of ACT UP as it battles corporate greed, social indifference, and government neglect."
Thank you, Sarah, for your hand in the progressive history that has brought the community to this point and the contributions you continue to make!
